Brutalist apartment block at night, New Belgrade

These blocks are easy to walk past in daylight — grey, repetitive, even the brutalism here is the ordinary, mass-produced kind. At night the same facade turns graphic: one streetlight does the lighting design, the shadows of the trees get printed onto the concrete, and a single lit window becomes the brightest thing in the frame. What stopped me here was the tree against the grid — everything in the building is a rectangle, and the branches are the only thing refusing.

Out of camera this was a fine but ordinary frame — the green of the plants at the base was the only thing color contributed, and the edit gives that up on purpose: once the color is gone, the geometry of the windows and panels is all that's left to carry the frame, and it carries it better. Black and white, more contrast, and grain on top of the already-high ISO: clean and smooth felt wrong for this much raw concrete. The noise gives the surface back its texture.
